Revolutionary care at the start of life: How Ghent University Hospital is redesigning the NICU with technology and humanity

In the quiet corridors of Ghent University Hospital, care takes on a new dimension. The recently expanded and specialized Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) for premature babies combines advanced technology with a focus on human well-being, placing both parents and caregivers at the heart of compassionate care for the tiniest patients.

A warm and quiet setting: peace and intimacy

The NICU has been redesigned with separate, calm rooms where premature babies can recover in a serene environment. At the same time, there is room for parental closeness and involvement — fostering a deep emotional bond from the very beginning.

Real-time monitoring through smart technology

Each room is equipped with an innovative medical alert and monitoring system: devices are wirelessly connected to the nurses’ smartphone system. Thanks to this connectivity, they can respond more quickly and accurately to any alarm signals.

Safety in every connection

The alert system operates via Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, and traditional wiring (CAN-bus), with emergency features such as indicator lights outside each room. This ensures alarm display is guaranteed, even if a network temporarily fails. Reliability is paramount—no alarm signal can be lost.

An evolution in collaboration and innovation

The LynX® (medical) nurse call platform, developed by 25-8, has been tested and refined in practice with input from hospital staff. This fruitful collaboration resulted in a solution that perfectly meets the needs of both nurses and parents: user-friendly, mobile, ergonomic, and secure.

A human-centered approach through hi-tech infrastructure

Modernization is not just about technology; it’s a step forward in humane care. By making alarm systems smarter and more reliable, nurses can focus more consciously on the well-being of the baby and parents, rather than on technical details. In this way, technology and human care form one powerful unity.

This transformation combines safety, calm, and parental involvement with smart technology, ensuring every signal counts and every second matters.

This NICU expansion at Ghent University Hospital proves that technological innovation and human warmth can go perfectly hand in hand. In life’s most delicate moments, even small innovations can make a world of difference—in safety, calm, and connection. An inspiring example of how care can be both future-proof and heartfelt.
